02/01/2021World Heritage in Flames: The Pantanal is "Threatened Lake of the Year 2021"
It is a sad record: The Pantanal is the first wetland to receive the title "Threatened Lake of the Year" for the second time. The Global Nature Fund (GNF) and the Living Lakes Network present this award annually on the occasion of the "World Wetlands Day" on 2 February to a lake or wetland that is massively endangered by human intervention. The destruction of the South American natural wonder has different causes. What measures are needed to protect the jaguar, lowland tapir and co. is clear, however. They require the determined commitment of the people on the ground, but also in Europe, whose consumption influ-ences the fragile ecosystem.

The population of insects in Germany is dwindling - and at an alarming rate. In the project "Insect Responsible Sourcing Regions", the Global Nature Fund is involved in developing solutions for a new culture of insect protection in dialogue with agriculture. The goal is a strategy that proves effective not only at the farm level, but also at the landscape level. 08/08/2019IPCC Special Report: GNF calls for action to protect biodiversity and combat climate change
Today the Special Report on Climate Change and Land Use was published by representa-tives of the 195 member states of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report warns of the consequences of soil erosion for the global climate, mainly driven by intensive agriculture. The environmental foundations Global Nature Fund and Lake Constance Foundation call for more measures to protect biodiversity as an important step against degradation and for climate protection.

A new publication by the Global Nature Fund presents business ideas that combine the protection of biodiversity in and around protected areas with successful economic activities. The guide for the development of Pro Biodiversity Business was created in the EcoKarst project and presented to interested companies, regional development agencies and civil society at a final conference in Slovenia in June.

From 7 to 9 May 2019 the 15th International Living Lakes Conference took place in Valencia, Spain. 200 delegates from over 40 countries discussed current challenges and solutions for the protection of lakes and wetlands. In view of the IPBES biodiversity report and the dramatic loss of lakes and wetlands, the participants of the conference called for a rapid and stronger commitment by politics, business and society to the protection of aquatic ecosystems.

The Jordan, once a mighty river between Jordan, Israel and Palestine, has shrunk to a trickle. Providing local residents with clean water is a daily challenge. With a pilot project, the Global Nature Fund (GNF) and EcoPeace Middle East want to mitigate and improve the water situation in the community of Deir Alla and in the Sharhabil Bin Hassneh EcoPark in Jordan.
