    33 new wild bee species discovered in Saarland as part of the "LIFE Insect-Responsible Sourcing Region" project

    Wild bee specialists discover 33 new species of wild bees in the Bliesgau biosphere in Saarland. The discovery was made as part of the EU-funded LIFE project " Insect-Responsible Sourcing Region ".
    Climate change, immigration and a lack of evaluation of previous findings are possible causes for the new bee discoveries in the UNESCO biosphere reserve.

    From bicycle tires to condoms - natural rubber is found in many everyday products. However, this rubber is often obtained under difficult social and ecological conditions. The Fair Rubber Association, run by Global Nature Fund, campaigns for fair prices and environmentally friendly conditions in the countries where the rubber is grown. On behalf of Fair Rubber, GNF Managing Director Stefan Hörmann traveled to Sumatra in December 2023 to visit the rubber tappers.

    Fighting microplastics in inland waters - EU project "LIFE Blue Lakes" presents results at final conference

    After four years, the EU-funded project "LIFE Blue Lakes" to combat microplastics in inland waters presents its results at the final conference in Rome. 98 percent of the water samples taken as part of the project show microplastic pollution. The main polluters include plastic bags, cosmetics, packaging, clothing and tires. Microplastics enter the human body through the food chain, where adverse health effects are likely.

    Young natural paradise: Geiseltalsee is German "Living Lake of the Year 2023"

    – The Global Nature Fund and the Living Lakes Network Germany nominate the Geiseltalsee in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt as "Living Lake of the Year 2023".
    – The lake was created as part of recultivation measures in a former lignite mining area and has developed into a habitat for exceptional flora and fauna within 30 years.
    – The protection of this young ecosystem requires close cooperation between all stakeholders at the lake and in the region in order to exclude any hazards from the very beginning.
