About the Mangrove Future Day 2022

After the great success of the 1st Mangrove Future Day in 2019, the aim of this year's 2nd Mangrove Future Day is to engage in an intensive dialogue with stakeholders from society, politics and business on options for action to protect, restore and sustainably use mangrove forests.

In three thematic blocks addressing politics, media and the private sector - especially food retailers - participants will be invited to discuss the challenges mangrove forests and people on tropical coasts are facing with regard to climate change, food security – topics that are also directly related to consumer behaviour and lifestyles in Germany and Europe.

Project partner Mangrove Future Day 2022

As global actors in research, capacity development, extension and implementation on mangrove conservation and reforestation, the ZMT, the GNF and fairGROVE have the expertise, the long experience and the network of relevant partners on the ground to develop and initiate scientifically validated measures for the conservation, sustainable use and restoration of mangrove forests worldwide. The DHU delves into the aspect of sustainability with a focus on alternatives to fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture feeds.

Due to the global dimension of the biodiversity and climate crisis, as well as the supra-regional and global importance of mangrove forests, these actions are also of fundamental importance for society, the economy and politics in Germany. Besides their contributions to the United Nations SDGs, mangrove forests unite the goals of the current UN Decades of Ecosystem Restoration and Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Background mangrove forests

Mangroves have made their way into the media and social consciousness in connection with the fight against the biodiversity and climate crisis. Along with other coastal ecosystems, mangrove forests are among the most efficient nature-based solutions against climate change (keyword "blue carbon"). They also provide numerous essential ecosystem services for the local population and contribute to a large number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The past decades have witnessed a drastic global decline in mangrove area and the degradation of existing mangrove forests. Although we have witnessed an encouraging decline in the rate of loss and increasing success in planting and restoring mangrove forests in recent years, mangrove forests are among the most threatened ecosystems on earth - despite their invaluable benefits to humanity.
