Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) - German Environmental Foundation

The project is supported by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU). The DBU is one of Europe''s largest foundations and promotes innovative and exemplary environmental projects. The DBU was established in 1990 on the basis of an amount of 1.3 Billion Euro obtained by privatising the former steel group Salzgitter AG. The income of the environmental foundation is used for promotional activities. Since 1991, almost 5,500 projects have received financial backing totalling over 1 Billion Euro. The supported activities concentrate on environmental technology and research, nature conservation, environmental communication and cultural assets.

Within the framework of environmental protection, the Baltic Sea and its bordering countries are of particular importance. With Poland, the Czech Republic as an important EC membership state and neighbour country, the Baltic States and the region of Kaliningrad, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, the DBU initiated an international scholarship programme, offering thus an additional qualification for offspring scientists from those countries through a research stay in Germany.
