Provision of basic necessities to flood affected people in Pakistan
Global Nature Fund supports the partner organisation SANGAT in situ
In the district of Sindh, approx. 80 % of the houses were destroyed by the heavy rains and inundations in August and September 2011, currently many flood victims live in open air. Only 30 % of their domestic animals have survived the floods and the complete harvest was destroyed. In the affected areas, wheat could not be cultivated thus during the next months serious food shortage and malnutrition will be the consequence of the disaster.
Although the monsoon season has come to an end, the situation in the flood affected regions in Pakistan, is still precarious. In the Sindh district, nearly 60,000 habitants are concerned by the direct consequences, such as the complete loss of harvest and the loss of their houses.
The joint project of the Global Nature Fund and SANGAT started in July 2011 to sustainably improve the supply of food of 15 families affected by the floods in 2010 and offer the families a livelihood through the cultivation of vegetables and the fruit trees such as the “Indian Jujube”. Now again the project area is affected by inundations so that all project activities have been interrupted and will be continued in November 2011 only after the floodwaters have dropped.
After months of rainfalls and floodings, meeting the basic needs of the victims has priority. They need food, drinking water, and tents. Within a 50 km radius of its headquarter in the Sindh district, SANGAT is involved in the supply of basic necessities to the flood-affected inhabitants in three regions.
For 5 Euro, people can buy a mosquito net to protect themselves against mosquito bites. A tent costs 50 Euro and offers protection against the beginning cold season.
