Bracciano Lake – Italy
Bracciano Lake (Italian: Lago di Bracciano) is a nearly circular lake with a surface of 57.5 sq. km, situated in a formal volcanic crater. Bracciano Lake is the second largest lake in the province of Latium and the eight largest Italian lake. Its maximum depth measures 160 metres. The lake lies at an altitude of 164 m and the river Arrone is the only natural out-flow of the lake.
Since the Roman Empire, the lake was used as drinking water source. Since 1987, the motor boats are forbidden as well as the use of fertilizers and pesticides is banned. Since then, the water quality improved again within a few years.
Poplars, alders and willows grow at the lake shore, and also the fish fauna, once the essential base of the local economy, is rich and varied (pikes, perch and others). Many migratory birds also live in the lake region, whereas the mammal species are rare, because of the tourism and urban developments.
