The Lago Maggiore

An area of 212 sq. km makes the Lago Maggiore the second largest lake in Italy, whereby only  80 % of its area belong to Italy (the provinces of Piemont and Lombardei). The other 20 % belong to Switzerland (Canton Tessin). The lake formed, like all other alpine lakes in the area, as the ice age glaciers melted.

The Tessin River (Ital: Ticino) is the major feeder and the only runoff of the Lago Maggiore. Its estuary, the Bolle di Magadino, is a species-rich nature reserve. Further feeders are the rivers Maggia, Verzasca and Toce.

The fishermen of Lago Maggiore fish a total of 150 tons of fish every year.
