Renewable Energy for Fisher Folks of Lake Victoria
Global Nature Fund and the Kenyan Living Lakes partner organisation OSIENALA promote the use of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies at Lake Victoria. An 18 month project started end of 2004 with the aim to improve the standard of living of rural fisher communities on the Kenyan border of Lake Victoria while at the same time reducing negative environmental impacts at Africa’s largest lake. The introduction of solar lanterns, water purification and fish cooling plants based on photovoltaic power as well as energy efficient kilns would contribute to reduce the consumption of kerosene and fuelwood. The project was financially supported by the German Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) and the Foundation LANDESSTIFTUNG Baden-Württemberg.
