Activities July, August and September 2007
31 July 2007:
The Nagenahiru Foundation (NF) organised a one day workshop for 104 craftswomen around the Maduganga Wetlands in the frame of the EU-Post Tsunami Project. This workshop was organised in co-operation with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the Southern Provincial Council as well as government institutions such as the National Design Centre.
The Southern Province Development Authority was present at this workshop. The high ranking officers of these government institutions assured the gathering that the government will fully collaborate with the NF with the aim to foster the wetland craft and encourage rural women to protect wetlands through wetland craft.
16 August 2007:
Following institutions participated and promised the craftswomen to co-operate with NF to uplift their livelihoods.
Leaders Community was appointed on 16th August 2007. The following decisions were taken und the following activities were designed to be implemented in August and September 2007:
- Southern Provincial Council will finance and conduct a two days workshop on entrepreneurship development for 30 women leaders engaged in wetland craft. Southern Provincial Council will provide financial assistance to a selected group of women to grow wetland plant species, presently the NF is conducting a community survey to identify the beneficiaries.
- NF will conduct a one day workshop with the collaboration of the Government National Design Centre to introduce modern designs and colouring techniques for wetland craft.
- NF will organize a three days workshop on the production of environmental packaging articles made of wetland plant species with the collaboration of the National Institute of Packaging Sri Lanka.
- NF has already decided to transfer the Wetland Craft Centre to a more attractive location close to the Colombo - Galle Main Road at Balapitiya.
