Constitution of the Bolgoda Lake Conservation Committee

June 2007: The Bolgoda Lake Conservation Committee, consisting of the Ministry of Environment, local authorities, the Ecotourism Foundation and EMACE representatives met and discussed numerous actions to be taken in the Bolgoda region. One topic on the agenda was the curbing of the sawdust menace in the area, using strict nature regulations by the local authority of Moratuwa. The committee also pressed the government to properly demarcate the lake boundaries. Another discussion point was to convince the Environment Minister to declare the Bolgoda Lake a nature reserve.

EMACE is working on capacity building with the Bolgoda Lake Conservation Committee. It was noted that sustainable fishing guidelines will be developed further, in order to support the fishing communities and that the Ministry of Agriculture will continue to support EMACE´s organic farming initiative. Nonetheless, additional financial support is required in order to provide a motorised vehicle and additional staff as well as scientists, researchers and an eco architect.
