Since 1998, the German Federal Foundation for Environment (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU) has been supporting our network Living Lakes. DBU, one of the largest foundation trusts in Europe, developed from the privatising of the "Salzgitter AG". The Foundation's main task is to promote projects that protect the environment, giving consideration in particular to medium-sized enterprises.
The guidelines for support from the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt list following fields: environmental technology, environmental research, environmental communication and education as well as cultural and natural assets. Important criteria are the innovative character, the suitability of the project as a role model, the possibilities of its implementation and its practicality. Evaluation of the project largely depends on the concrete contribution towards relieving the strain on the environment, going beyond the degree stipulated by the law.
